Adaptive Mountain Biking |
Adaptive mountain biking (aMTB) refers to any adaptation or redesign of equipment,
or the provision of suitable facilities resulting in a wider range of disabled
riders getting onto the trails and out into the mountain environment. In short,
it is about helping more riders get an authentic mountain biking experience. At SnowBikers, we are pleased to find ourselves in the thick of the aMTB scene, being involved in setting up the UK’s first permanent aMTB facility at the nearby Coed y Brenin Forest Park. We were involved in the consultation process for the blue grade (moderate) MinorTaur trail which is being built wide enough for adaptive bikes, and have led the setting up of the Challenge your Boundaries project which will provide equipment, skills coaching and MTB leadership facilities at the Trail Centre. We are also involved in the design of a ‘Leading Adaptive Mountain Bikers (LAMB)’ training course for MTB leaders who want to get involved with aMTB. See the Calendar Page for further information. Below are just some of the activities we can offer. Give us a call with your specific requirements and we’ll try and come up with something to match them. For more information about aMTB, see www.adaptiveMTB.co.uk To give you a flavour of what aMTB is about, an experienced rider with a spinal cord injury shows us how its done on one of our hand cycle pilot rides...

Family Days
Ride with an experienced leader, who will help you get to grips with unfamiliar adaptive bikes and will take you on a journey suited to everyone in the group. The adaptive bikes might include hand cycles, tandems and tag-alongs, depending on the needs of the riders. Costs: More Info: Skills Coaching & Guided Rides
For anyone wishing to explore a bit further off the beaten track, we offer a guiding service for up to 4 riders. Local knowledge about the trail network in general, and which trails are wide enough for aMTBs in particular, will help ensure you get the most out of your day. Costs More Info: Tandem Tours
Ride with an experienced pilot, who can provide a verbal narrative while you feel the wind in your hair (if such is possible under a helmet) and the breeze on your face. The popular Mawddach Trail is a great place to start out on your tandeming career. More experienced riders might fancy upping the adrenalin by tackling some of the off-road mountain bike trails at Coed y Brenin. It is worth bearing in mind that all of the trails, including The Beast” have been successfully navigated by a tandem team. We also have a two-wheel tag-along which can be hitched to a regular cycle to provide a tandem effect with a greater degree of stability if required. Costs More Info: |
"...it was affirmation that my life as an off road cyclist hasn't ended, merely adapted to suit my new situation. The method may have changed but the end result is the same, it makes me glad to be alive." |
